How to Care for Your Artwork

Gouache Paintings

Moisture
Gouache is a water-soluble paint medium, so a major concern is moisture.
Please be mindful of the humidity in which the artwork is stored or displayed. Humidity around 50% or below is best. It's also important to consider major changes in humidity, which can cause the paper to expand and contract, this may crack the paint and cause it to lift from the paper.
Ensuring that the artwork is properly framed can help with defending against moisture.
Sunlight
UV exposure can fade the colors of the painting over time, so choosing a location that is not in direct sunlight is important for preservation. A frame that has UV-protective glass can help.
Acid
The artworks are painted on acid-free paper, attached to acid-free matting with acid-free tape, and shipped in an acid-free bag.
Acid exposure can cause a yellowing effect on the paper and possible discoloring of the paint, so be sure to use acid-free, or archival quality, materials when matting and framing.

More advice on caring for artwork
I would suggest talking with a professional art framer for more information on how to best care for your artwork.
I do not provide frames for commissioned pieces, so I recommend working with an art framer anyway.

About Me

Hi, I'm John.
I've always loved to make art for people, and I've always loved animals. Painting portraits of your beloved pet feels like a perfect fit for me.
When I'm not making art, I work as a dog walker and pet sitter in Columbus, Ohio. Every time I go on walks and have snuggles with my animal friends, it makes me want to make art of them; I have so much fun trying to capture their individuality in a painting.
The drive to paint my animal friends it what encouraged me to start this business.
I'm excited for the opportunity to turn the care and love that you have for your pet into a painting that can be cherished for years to come.

Reference Photo Help

1. Photo Quality
In order to accurately depict details that are specific to your pet, it's important that your reference photos are in proper focus, are high resolution, and show the subject unobstructed by other objects.
2. Lighting
Photos with natural lighting often provide the best representation of the color of your pet.
Additionally, lighting that gives some shadows can make for a more interesting painting. This means avoiding lighting that is too intense, which will reduce the amount of contrast, and avoid lighting that is too dim, which will also reduce the contrast. Lighting that's too intense or too dim might look flat and uninteresting.
3. Pose
Choosing a reference photo with a desirable pose is very important.
I think that a 3/4th turn tends to look nice, but I'm happy to discuss other poses too, as long as there's a reference photo for it.
The portrait will show roughly from mid-chest to full head, so please keep that in mind.
4. Number of Photos
I can usually work from just one photo, as long as it's high quality, has good lighting, and shows the pose that you'd like, but I welcome as many photos as you'd like to provide. More references means that I might see some extra detail that isn't shown in the primary photo, and will mean that I'm more able to accurately paint the specifics of your unique pet friend.

Still unsure?
After you've filled out and submitted the commission form, I'll email you to request reference photos and any additional information. At that point, I can help you choose which photos work well and which ones don't.
